The village
is very pretty indeed and it is all you imagine a typical Swiss mountain
village should be. When we first arrived we wondered where the tourist
buses were, it is the sort of place people would come and look around
because it is so quaint with so much character. Many of the chalets are
made of larch wood which has weathered black over the years. Some Chalets
date as far back as 1710. Every effort has been made to keep the original
character of the village. The village is arranged in a horse shoe shape
with chalets banking up the higher sides of the mountain which can become
quite steep in places. The main part of the village is on a level so is
easy to walk around.
Please
look at the map to see where all the facilities
are in the village in relation to the position of the Chalet Mesanges.
Shops
in the village.
Ski and sports shop is about 250m from the Chalet. It is the only sports
shop in the village and they speak English in the shop. You can hire skis,
boots and helmets from the basement of the shop. They are very kind and
friendly and hire equipment is very good quality.

Bakers
shop.
This is less than 100m from the Chalet, it sells all kinds of bread and
pastries, and you can buy milk and other provisions from this shop.

Newsagent.
This is further down the road from the bakers and sells a few gifts and
English newspapers.
Village food shop.
Next door to the newsagents there is a general food shop which sells convenience
items, bread and great ice cream.

Fondue
restaurant
This can be found between
the Newsagents and the General food shop. Newly renovated this is a great
place for a real Swiss fondue or Raclette.

Playground
This is situated about 150m from the Chalet, The Hotel Meyen is right
next door and it is great place to sit in the sun and have a hot chocolate
and keep and eye on the children in the playground at the same time. The
Hotel also has a bar and a pizza restaurant. It is the least expensive
restaurant in Vercorin.

Butcher
The Butcher is a great character and the shop is very typical of the region.
It sells great quality meat at reasonable prices.

Supermarket
This is great for a short stay as it sells most things. If you want to
do a large shop it might be a good idea to go to Sierre to one of the
larger supermarkets down in the valley.
Cafes,
Hotels and Disco.
There are quite a few cafes and 3 hotels in Vercorin. All have great restaurants
selling local food. All have good service and have warm and cozy atmospheres.
The Disco is portioned down the hill from the Chalet.
Petrol
pump
Petrol is available 24/7 in the village. The petrol station can be found
on the bottom road out of the village towards Sierre. You can pay for
petrol using an automated credit card system. The system takes Swiss and
foreign credit cards. The
system is very easy to use, insert your credit card, enter your code then
choose the number of pump you are using, then fill up.
Rubbish
Collection
There is a recycling area in the village just up from the petrol pump.
The village has communal bins and there are separate bins for bottles
and paper etc..
